In celebration of Women’s History month, Helping Hands is profiling some very influential women Psychologists. Women had many obstacles to overcome to influence psychological theory, yet many of the women Psychologists had a profound effect upon the field of psychology. Women’s influence in the field continues today. The electronic version of Helping Hands has some links to more information. I have attached both the .docx and pdf versions – click on both to see which version works best for you. 
 
     There are many peer volunteers who have elected to take advantage of the buy-out offers made by United and American Airlines. Most of you who have opted to retire or pursue another direction have been with us for many years. You have greatly impacted the lives of your fellow members and co-workers in ways you will never know! I am SO grateful to have worked side by side with each of you! I believe we are all here to help each other and to make the road a little bit easier for others – all of you have lived that philosophy by being EAP Peers. Thank you for all you have done to help others along the way! 
 

     Rest assured that none of you will go very far, once an EAP, always an EAP! We may be calling on you in the next critical incident, natural disaster, or any situation in which we can use your experience and expertise to resolve an issue.

Honoring Black History Month: IAMAW Brother Ron Robinson reflects on his black role models and suggests that they might not change their strategies for dealing with Civil Rights much if they were active today. According to Robinson, “I think that those back leaders… would have blacks focused more, and working in one direction.”

We are proud to feature District 141 Regional Employee Assistance Program Representative, Ron Robinson as we celebrate Black History Month.

Ron Robinson is a 43 year veteran of United Airlines from Local 1932 in Los Angeles and has been active in the EAP since 2004. Asked how he thinks prominent black figures from the past would respond to the issues of today, he responded by saying that their mission probably wouldn’t change much. He spoke about Black History Month with Dave Lehive this week.

“I think the leaders of that time if they were alive today, Malcolm X, the James Chaneys, the Charles Moores… I think that those guys would be doing the same things now that they were doing then,” Robinson said. He pointed out that, while the passage of landmark legislation such as the Civil Rights Act, and the Voting Rights Acts of 1964 and 1965 were helpful, by the early 70’s they were already being scaled back. Today, persons of color are facing many of the same institutional inequities as those of earlier eras, and therefore, today’s generation can learn directly from those that came before them.

“So, I think that those leaders probably today would have blacks focused more, and moving in one direction. Right now, I think we tend to be a bit splintered.” Robinson held up Black Lives Matter as an example of a modern movement that he thinks is carrying forward the legacy of the Civil Rights Era. “It’s a good thing,” he said. “Not only have blacks rallied around it, but people all around the world are rallying behind Black Lives Matter.”

But, that’s what I think our leaders (of the past) would do; they would be organizing us again – to move in the same direction.”

But Robinson also recalled the contributions of white allies and supporters, some of which might be surprising, such as Mitt Romney’s father, former Michigan Governor, George Romney.

“George Romney went from being the American Motors president to government,” Robinson recounted. “By the time I was in school, he had become the governor of Michigan.” The elder Romney was a sincere civil rights activist who wasn’t afraid of taking a public stand in support of racial justice. “People don’t realize that Mitt Romney’s father, George Romney, marched with Martin Luther King. He marched with Abernathy. When they had the marches in Detroit, he marched right along with them. When the UAW marched, he marched right along with them.”

His work as an advocate for black people did not end with public displays of support. According to Robinson, “he was a man who visualized desegregation in living, in housing, and in education. He wanted equal education for all children in Michigan.” Romney went on to push for reforms at the Department of Housing and Urban Development under Nixon, where he quickly made enemies of the right-leaning administration. “He was a Republican in a heavily blue state,” Robinson said. “But, he was elected and re-elected as governor.”

Machinists & Aerospace Union Members Provide Support for Veterans

The IAM’s Veterans Services program is reporting a boost in recruitment. The program, which is under the union’s Retirees and Membership Assistance Department, was created in 2016 and continues its growth in popularity. Enrollment is up from 2,400 in July 2020 to 4,100 as of this February.

“Seeing an opportunity to increase interest and further expand the program, we wanted to ramp up our efforts by reaching out to everyone,” said IAM Retirees and Membership Assistance Director Ed Manhart, who manages the IAM’s military veteran outreach. “It’s the least we can do for their selfless acts of courage and sacrifices they made for our country.”

The program provides an extensive range of services such as the IAM Employee Assistance Program. It also offers help to veterans struggling with PTSD, mental health problems and/or substance abuse. Veterans can attend week-long seminars at the union-owned and operated Winpisinger Education and Technology Center in Hollywood, MD. One particular segment of the training helps military veterans navigate through the often-complicated and difficult tasks of filing benefit claims with the federal government. All IAM membership services are free of charge.

The IAM encourages military veterans to enroll in the program by visiting its website or submitting paper applications. In early January of this year, the Veterans Services program launched the latest veterans outreach effort by sending packets of application forms to all IAM districts and locals across the country. The project is proving successful through an increased awareness, interest and participation in this valuable IAM member service benefit.

February Helping Hands: Relationships

Helping Hands focuses on relationships for February. Relationships have been strained during covid for a variety of reasons. Home isolation due to working at home, home schooling, stay at home orders as well as people being averse to going out in public have led to couples, families and roommates being around each other more than pre-covid.
 
This month we talk about ways to help relationships remain positive and how to get back on track if the relationship is strained. Some of the ideas are applicable to work situations also.
 
We are coming up on a year of restrictions due to covid. Every one of you has had your own issues to deal with and you have also been able to be there for your co-workers. I am grateful for the sacrifices you make regularly to be a resource for those around you who need your help. Thank you!

Joe Washburn, a Lead Ramp Services Agent for United Airlines at Philadelphia International Airport, has been appointed East Coast Regional Peer Coordinator for the District 141 Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Joe Washburn, a Lead Ramp Services Agent for United Airlines at Philadelphia International Airport, has been appointed East Coast Regional Peer Coordinator for the District 141 Employee Assistance Program (EAP). He will be responsible for helping union members in Baltimore, Washington DC, Orlando, and Philadelphia. 

“The District 141 Employee Assistance Program provides a vital resource that thousands of airline workers can rely on to provide meaningful help in times of crisis,” said District 141 President Mike Klemm when he announced the appointment. “I can’t think of a more solid guy to have in our corner than Joe,” he added.

Joe Washburn began working at United in 1991 as a Cabin Services Agent at Washington Dulles International Airport. He had viewed himself as “unemployable” at the time because of a series of personal issues he had been dealing with at his former job. When he was leaving that job, Joe was approached by an EAP Rep, who helped him find the stability he needed to land his new job. 

When Joe began his new career at United, only 50 Cabin Service Agents were working at Dulles. Within six months, the company had hired 100 more. That fast growth allowed Joe to move to the United ramp and attain full-time status. In 1995, he was recruited by Al Abromitas to join the IAMAW District 141 Employee Assistance Program. 

Al Abromitas was a principal figure in the EAP, and his patient activism had a significant impact on Joe. “He’s a great guy. He took the time to listen, to learn about what I was going through, and he let me know how important my journey would be to other people going through the same things.” 

“It was a debt that I wanted to repay,” Joe said of his decision to join the EAP. “And, Al was the right guy to bring me into the program after I started at United.” 

According to Joe, mentorship is an essential aspect of EAP training, and Al Abromitas was a pivotal instructor. “It’s important to find someone that you respect in this role and who you would want to emulate and learn from,” he said. “There’s a lot that goes into EAP advocacy: Ethics, expectations, confidentiality… there are so many things that have to be considered. It’s so much easier to learn these things from someone that’s already been there.” 

Today, with his trademark cigar and rock-solid work ethic, Joe Washburn has become a regular fixture at Philadelphia International, where he has also served as a Shop Steward and Grievance Committeeman. But his work with the EAP is undoubtedly one of his proudest accomplishments.

“It’s personal for us,” Joe said.”Let me be very clear. Without this EAP program, I would not be an employee. When I left my old job, I was unemployable. I was a wreck. But, now, I’ve given United Airlines nearly 30 years of service. Many of us in the EAP have been on the other side of the fence. A lot of us came to the EAP seeking help, and ended up joining the program out of gratitude and obligation.”

“That’s part of what makes the EAP such a successful program,” Joe said.  “If you need help, we’re not going to judge you. A lot of us know firsthand what you’re going through. This is personal for us.”

IAM District 141 member Victor Acosta’s artwork appeared on the back of the calendar. The painting entitled “Helping Hand” shows a greyish white background with two brown arms extending and shaking hands. Acosta says it represents the relationship between union members and the district’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP), an employee benefit program that assists workers with personal problems such as mental and emotional well-being.

Handcrafted artwork from two IAM members appeared in a 2021 SUNY Empire State College calendar. The pieces were part of an annual calendar distributed by the Harry Van Arsdale Jr. School of Labor Studies in New York, an associates, bachelors and master’s degree program that includes prominent IAM alumni.

“Everyone who has received a copy of the calendar loves it – not only because it celebrates the incredible creativity of our students but because it also offers a snapshot of labor history at your fingertips,” says university spokesperson Solomon Syed. “Too many people are not familiar with labor’s rich history and how it has benefitted all working people.”

A photo of an album cover for a re-mixed version of the popular labor song “Solidarity Forever” represents the month of January and was created by IAM Organizing Grand Lodge Representative Gabrielle Rogano. The original image is a collage composed of union literature, images of women workers and colorful font.

“It took me a full day of crafting. The center piece is made from a canvas which is glued onto a piece of cardboard,” said Rogano. “It feels phenomenal to have my artwork featured.”

“The artwork is an oleo or oil as it is known and took three hours to complete. The canvas size is 18×24 inches,” said Acosta, District 141 EAP Department Regional Coordinator. “I’ve been an artist since early childhood. Early in my youth I learned how to produce acrylic, watercolors, pastel and oil art.” 

The first calendar was released by SUNY Empire State College in 2020 and the university plans to create another edition in 2022. Invitations to submit artwork are offered to students who are enrolled in the Labor Studies program. Since 2014, the IAM has partnered with SUNY Empire State College to offer degrees in labor studies through the Harry Van Arsdale, Jr. Center for Labor Studies.
