We Pledge to Protect Our Democracy

Sisters and Brothers,

One year ago, we watched as violence overtook the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to stop our nation’s sacred tradition of a peaceful transfer of power. Everyday citizens, first responders, and elected officials were put in harm’s way. It was an image many of us never thought we would see in the United States of America.

As a U.S. Navy veteran, like so many others who served our country, it was especially disturbing to see our democracy under attack. What happened that day was an affront to everything we stand for as a nation and as a union. While we encourage passionate debate and the right to disagree with one another, violence and hate are never the answer.

We must never forget this day. We must always protect our freedom and our democracy. Let’s move forward to protect the rights of all citizens and our sacred duty to make our voices heard at the ballot box instead of through violence.

The IAM successfully lobbied for the 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to fund military programs. Together, the programs support more than 100,000 IAM aerospace, defense, and shipbuilding jobs.

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) has passed and been signed into law by President Biden. The legislation totals $768 billion for national defense programs, including extensive funding for IAM-built programs.

“The Machinists Union is the largest defense labor union in the United States and we tirelessly fought for all of the Machinists Union priorities included in this bill,” said IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr. “This act will go a long way to ensuring our members and their families have a stable future. The legislation will also provide much-needed wage increases for our military men and woman while expanding their healthcare benefits, parental leave, and in-home child care.

Thanks to the IAM’s lobbying efforts, the 2022 NDAA authorizes funding for the following IAM- built and maintained programs:

  •  85 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters
  • 12 F-18 Super Hornets
  • 4 C-130J Super Hercules
  • 17 F-15 Eagles
  • 14 KC-46 Tankers
  • Two P-8 Poseidons
  • Three DDG-51 Arleigh Burke-class Destroyers
  • Two Virginia-class Attack Submarines
  • Robust funding for ramp up of Columbia-class Ballistic Submarine program

Other highlights include:

  • Renews, expands and improves oversight into domestic content in critical defense acquisition programs.
  • Supports Administration efforts to increase public availability of Department of Defense reporting on waivers of certain domestic preference requirements.
  • Establishes strong, recurring oversight mechanisms to detect and deter egregious violations of domestic preference laws.
  • Improves the legal framework to mitigate risk in critical defense supply chains and across the broader acquisition process, using leading-edge digital tools, technology, and approaches to enhance supply chain transparency.
  • Tightens restrictions on acquisitions of certain printed circuit boards for which supply chains may be susceptible to interference by the Chinese government.

 

The law also authorizes $27.8 billion for nuclear weapons activities allotted for the Department of Energy and fully funds the Department of Defense budget for the National Security Launch Program.

The IAMAW Scholarship Competition is open each year to members of the IAM and their children throughout the United States and Canada under procedures and rules of eligibility explained in this Announcement. The IAM Scholarship Fund, which is used exclusively to make possible these awards, was established by the delegates of the 1960 IAM Grand Lodge Convention. More information can be found here.

A Girl, a Scholarship, and a Dream

As Rachel Steele prepares to earn her doctorate in 2022, she looks back on how much an IAM scholarship meant to her back in 2003. Her father, Thomas Steele, was working for Boeing that year and she was featured in the IAM Journal as one of several scholarship winners.  The younger Steele feels the timing of her PhD candidacy, her dad’s retirement, and the current call for scholarship applicants is special.

She says her father ”worked tirelessly when we were growing up. He had to travel a lot, so he wasn’t always home and now as an adult, I realize how much of a sacrifice that was.”

Rachel originally wrote to IAM District 837 President and Directing Business Representative Tom Boelling, looking for a way to thank her dad in a follow-up to the 2003 edition of the IAM Journal.

“We’re so proud of Rachel and what she’s accomplished,” Boelling said. “We congratulate her on reaching the highest academic level of her educational career and congratulate her father, Thomas, on his retirement from Boeing.”

“Thank you for having the foresight for creating a scholarship,” Rachel said. 

Her advice for applicants? “Have confidence, especially if you’re a first-generation student. You deserve the recognition. It’s an amazing privilege. Be true to yourself. Tell your story in your own voice. Everyone has a story.”

“Congratulations to both Rachel on her upcoming doctorate and Thomas on his much-deserved retirement,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Steve Galloway. “The IAM has always placed a high value on education, from funding scholarships for IAM members and their families to advocating for a national investment in skills training. Rachel’s story shows how important the IAM Scholarship is to so many IAM families. Any eligible members or their children may apply for this life-changing scholarship to college or technical school.”

2022: A Year of Service to the Community

I hope you are all doing well and that 2022 brings you blessings. Staying safe and healthy is first and foremost. The uptick of the new Covid variant has made some of the work you all do more challenging, and know that remaining healthy and safe is a priority.

We had some phenomenal donations to Guide Dogs of America during the annual banquet in November 2021- BRAVO to all those locals that made very generous donations despite the difficulty in hosting events during Covid-19.

The Holidays were made JOYFUL, and many children have been blessed through the work of many Local Lodges along with the generous donations from our members. Hat’s off to all who participated. If you helped make the world a better place during the Holidays but haven’t shared your photos or a recap of what took place yet, please do so now- that way, we can highlight your area.

Ideas and motivation- does anyone need any inspiration to kick off a Drive or Event?

Does anyone have anything they would like to share as an idea?
We welcome all thoughts or even obstacles that we can assist in overcoming challenges and enhancing your events.

One question that has come up over the past year is whether or not two or more local lodges can join forces and help other locals with things like food and clothing drives. And the answer is YES! It would be great to work in tandem with other locals. This has been happening in some areas, and we would love to see more of it. If anyone is interested in that, please let me know, and I can facilitate that.

With all the areas we serve, many are in need. So let’s share our feedback and keep on serving our communities. Nothing is too small when helping those in need.

As always, Guide dogs of America is our union’s charity, and hosting an event to raise funds and awareness is always encouraged.

On Friday, December 10, 2021, your joint negotiations committee met in Chicago to discuss the outstanding issues remaining from our last negotiations session in Las Vegas last month. While we made significant progress and closed most issues, we need to draft the final language to get us to the tentative agreements for both groups. We are getting dates in January to meet to complete this task. As soon as we have confirmed dates, we will let you know. We thank everyone for their patience and support as we bring these talks to a conclusion.

Machinists Union Members at United Begin Contract Talks

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers began contract negotiations with United Airlines on Tuesday at the unions’ district headquarters in Chicago. The union is negotiating seven separate contracts at the airline, which will cover approximately 23,000 workers.

Both parties are working to return to the process of expedited negotiations, which had originally been scheduled to begin sometime in early 2020, but were postponed due to the pandemic. “The possibility that we could come to an agreement sooner rather than later is definitely on the table,” said Machinists Union District President Mike Klemm, who is involved in the talks. 

While the prospect of producing an agreement in the near term is appealing, Klemm cautioned that the union and company were still in the very early stages of drafting a new agreement, and that no solid deal had been worked out yet.

Under the Railway Labor Act, the set of laws that governs labor unions in the transportation sector, workers and employers can engage in an expedited collective bargaining process that would not renegotiate every aspect of an existing contract, but would instead update only the provisions that the union members target. 

The expedited process will give IAM members at United the opportunity to improve wages, benefits, and working conditions in the very near future,” Klemm told union members in the lead-up to the negotiations. “We used a similar model back in 2016 with great success, and both IAM District 141 and United agreed to discuss trying it again. Our hope is we can replicate that success, which brought us industry-leading contracts at the time.”

The IAM and United agreed in November 2015 to open existing collective bargaining agreements early and enter “limited issue, expedited negotiations” to take advantage of favorable industry conditions. The process concluded after four months of intense bargaining and led to industry-best contracts for IAM-represented workers at United Airlines.

At the time, the pact between United and the Machinists Union created some of the highest wages for fleet and customer service agents, instructors, and other unionized workgroups in the history of American commercial aviation. That deal produced wage increases of just over 18%, and overall compensation levels that delivered more than $3 billion for US-based airline workers. 

In 2019, an alliance between the Machinists Union and the Transport Workers Union at American Airlines produced another historic agreement. Once again, union members saw historic wage increases, this time accompanied by some of the most ironclad job protections the industry had ever seen. That agreement was ratified by an incredible 95% of fleet service workers – an almost impossible feat for a group the size of the unionized workers at American. In all, more than 30,000 workers at American Airlines are members of either the Machinists or Transport Workers Union. 

The personnel that drafted those historic agreements are returning once again to the bargaining table to hammer out the contract at United. Among them, Tom Regan, a veteran negotiator working on the United contract, has become legendary for his ability to close a deal. Regan, along with Assistant Airline Coordinator at the Machinists Union’s Transportation Territory, James Carlson, will be joining the negotiating team. 

“The main thing I want our members to know is that, yes, we want to bring a deal home as soon as possible,” Klemm said of the negotiations. “But, speed cannot come at the risk of losing things like job security. It won’t matter if our members are making $35 an hour if they don’t have strong job security protections,” he said. “The job protections we won in the 2016 United agreement and at American are the best our industry has ever seen,” he said. “And these protections are non-negotiable unless they improve.”

Thousands of United workers across different classifications from all over the nation participated in a pre-negotiations survey which shaped the topics of discussion for improvement in the upcoming contract.
