October Helping Hands: Mental Health Awareness Month

EAP Peer Coordinators:

October is Mental Health awareness month – Helping Hands addresses what a mental health condition is, where you can get good information (heavy emphasis on good), what therapy is about and how to find a counselor. We cover a lot of ground this month, it should be good information to share with your folks.

The pandemic has made it easier to talk about mental health. Mental health concerns are more prevalent than ever. Please help your folks talk about their issues and encourage them to seek help. As always all of us are available to support you in whatever way you may need.

September Helping Hands: Healthy Budgeting

EAP Peer Volunteers:

This month we focus on financial issues – specifically budgeting. While mental health issues are very prominent because of covid, financial issues are much more common than they were before 2019. The resources listed can help with many different financial concerns – the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau is a terrific resource for all of our members. They cover a lot of ground and a lot of financial topics.

Thank you for taking good care of our members. Being there for them in a time of need is important work and I am appreciative of all you are doing.

August Helping Hands: Wellness

IAM EAP Peer Volunteers:

I hope everyone is surviving the crippling heat of the past few weeks! The weather does drive a lot of behavior! Hot weather usually leads to more conflict between people – including while at work. Thank you for being there to help your co-workers when they need your help!

This month we address wellness – there are many types of wellness. Physical, emotional (which we address directly on page 2), social, financial, environmental and spiritual wellness are all important areas of focus. Wellness is defined and emotional wellness is addressed this month.

Please remember to take good care of yourselves – to be able to take good care of others. Thank you for all you are doing!

July Helping Hands: Cultural Awareness

EAP Peer Volunteers:

For July we address Cultural Awareness. Culture is defined, and why being culturally aware is important and how to develop cultural awareness are covered. All of us can benefit by increasing our knowledge of other cultures, their practices, and how cultures can successfully interact. As EAP peers we can all help when there is tension because of cultural differences. We can also help when those tensions boil over. Let’s try to help by identifying differences and how they can be positive as they are understood.

I hope you have had a safe and uneventful 4th of July! I am appreciative of all of the efforts each of you make to support everyone you are helping. I am grateful that during these very difficult times, we have network that can reposed to almost any difficulty that arises.

Thank you for being there for others. The work you are doing is important, and appreciated.

May Helping Hands: Overcoming the Stigma of Mental Illness

EAP Peer Volunteers:

Stigma about mental health has become a very hot topic. This month we address what stigma is and some things you can do to address stigma. The Mayo Clinic has some good information that is included.

As EAP peer volunteers we can have an impact on mental health and the stigma that is often associated with a mental health issue. Being accepting and inclusive of people experiencing a mental health issue can help others see that mental health issues are treatable and are often short term. Many of the longer term mental health issues can be managed very effectively. Let’s be the people who help others along the way and treat each other with acceptance and patience!

Thank you for being there for others. Zit is important work you are doing!

February Helping Hands: Healthy Relationships

EAP Directors:

Healthy relationships don’t look the same for everyone since people have different needs. Each partner’s specific needs around communication, affection, space, shared hobbies, values, and so on may change throughout life. A relationship that works in your 20s may be nothing like the relationship you want in your 50’s. Relationships that don’t align with more traditional definitions of a relationship can still be healthy.
