Join Our Push for the Biggest Labor Law Reform in Generations

IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr. sent a letter to members of Congress urging support for the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act. The PRO Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA) in the House and Senator Patty Murray in the Senate (D-WA), is the most significant worker empowerment legislation since the Great Depression.

“The PRO Act strengthens protections for employees that engage in collective action and levels the playing field by prohibiting employers from requiring their employees to attend “captive audience” meetings whose sole purpose is to convince workers to vote against the union,” said IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr. “In addition to imposing financial penalties on employers and individual corporate offices who violate the law, the bill would give workers the option of bringing their case to federal court.

‘Finally, the PRO Act would override state “right to work” laws. These laws are simply designed to give more power to corporations at the expense of workers, and have had the effect of lowering wages and eroding pensions and health care coverage in states where they have been adopted.”

WATCH: Pushing for the PRO Act

IAM members must act now to tell your Senators and Representative to pass this legislation, which will protect workers’ right to organize a union and bargain for higher wages and better benefits.

TAKE ACTION: Tell your U.S. Senators and Representative to support the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act

Call your Representative at 202-224-3121 to urge them to pass the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, allowing workers the right to freely form a union without the threat of company intimidation or interference.

141 Report: Charlie Defrancesco, The Powerhouse of Local 1044

The 141 Report featured guest this week is Charlie Defrancesco, President of Air Transport Local 1044 based in Pittsburgh, PA.

A 41-year veteran of USAirways, now American Airlines, Charlie has seen his share of “ups and downs” in the airline business and has helped his local navigate through many storms without giving up the power of union solidarity.

Brother Charlie Defrancesco became a union Steward to show appreciation to a friend who was a union activist and helped him get his first job at the airline. That’s when he saw first hand “the power they had when they went into hearings. They got things done.”

His determination to make a difference through his work in the union became stronger when he joined the IAM, so he ran for a position in the grievance committee. “Guys liked what I was doing so they elected me committee chair” shortly after, he said. Charlie also served as Conductor Sentinel, Trustee, and Vice President of Local 1044 before he was elected President.

Over the past 41 years, Local 1044 has endured many blows because of the 2001 terrorist attacks, two bankruptcies, and industry downturns, including the current pandemic. From a high of 1,600 members in the 1980s, it now has 320 members in Pittsburgh and Akron, representing workers from District 141 and District 142. Over the years, the local has adapted to new circumstances by trimming costs in areas such as travel to some conferences, but they have never compromised on strongly representing members.

Local 1044 holds meetings on the second Thursday of each month at the lodge they share with Local 1976, located in Moon Township, PA – about 5 miles from PIT.

Charlie is proud that young members on the local’s executive board are interested in rising to positions of more responsibility and spends time mentoring them. He calls the current board “One of the best groups I’ve worked with.”

He says he always does his work expecting nothing in return, so for Charlie, the best part of his job is when a member says thank you. “It is the biggest reward, to know I did something good.”

He summarizes what really drives his work: “It’s not the power, it’s being able to help people.”

Honoring Black History Month: IAMAW Brother Ron Robinson reflects on his black role models and suggests that they might not change their strategies for dealing with Civil Rights much if they were active today. According to Robinson, “I think that those back leaders… would have blacks focused more, and working in one direction.”

Black History Month: EAP Rep and Longtime Union Activist, Ron Robinson

We are proud to feature District 141 Regional Employee Assistance Program Representative, Ron Robinson as we celebrate Black History Month.

Ron Robinson is a 43 year veteran of United Airlines from Local 1932 in Los Angeles and has been active in the EAP since 2004. Asked how he thinks prominent black figures from the past would respond to the issues of today, he responded by saying that their mission probably wouldn’t change much. He spoke about Black History Month with Dave Lehive this week.

“I think the leaders of that time if they were alive today, Malcolm X, the James Chaneys, the Charles Moores… I think that those guys would be doing the same things now that they were doing then,” Robinson said. He pointed out that, while the passage of landmark legislation such as the Civil Rights Act, and the Voting Rights Acts of 1964 and 1965 were helpful, by the early 70’s they were already being scaled back. Today, persons of color are facing many of the same institutional inequities as those of earlier eras, and therefore, today’s generation can learn directly from those that came before them.

“So, I think that those leaders probably today would have blacks focused more, and moving in one direction. Right now, I think we tend to be a bit splintered.” Robinson held up Black Lives Matter as an example of a modern movement that he thinks is carrying forward the legacy of the Civil Rights Era. “It’s a good thing,” he said. “Not only have blacks rallied around it, but people all around the world are rallying behind Black Lives Matter.”

But, that’s what I think our leaders (of the past) would do; they would be organizing us again – to move in the same direction.”

But Robinson also recalled the contributions of white allies and supporters, some of which might be surprising, such as Mitt Romney’s father, former Michigan Governor, George Romney.

“George Romney went from being the American Motors president to government,” Robinson recounted. “By the time I was in school, he had become the governor of Michigan.” The elder Romney was a sincere civil rights activist who wasn’t afraid of taking a public stand in support of racial justice. “People don’t realize that Mitt Romney’s father, George Romney, marched with Martin Luther King. He marched with Abernathy. When they had the marches in Detroit, he marched right along with them. When the UAW marched, he marched right along with them.”

His work as an advocate for black people did not end with public displays of support. According to Robinson, “he was a man who visualized desegregation in living, in housing, and in education. He wanted equal education for all children in Michigan.” Romney went on to push for reforms at the Department of Housing and Urban Development under Nixon, where he quickly made enemies of the right-leaning administration. “He was a Republican in a heavily blue state,” Robinson said. “But, he was elected and re-elected as governor.”

Ron Robinson is an Employee Assistance Rep for the Southwest Region. He assists United Airlines members in Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, and Orange County. President Tim Nestler, who began his career at USAirways in Pittsburgh in 1987, and Chris Willis, who spearheaded the IAM Safety Program at Spirit Airlines and has served as Grievance Chair since 2018, were recently elected President and Vice President.

141 Report: New Leadership at Local 368

This week, the 141 Report travels via Zoom to sunny South Florida, to speak with the newly elected leaders of Local 368. President Tim Nestler, who began his career at USAirways in Pittsburgh in 1987, and Chris Willis, who spearheaded the IAM Safety Program at Spirit Airlines and has served as Grievance Chair since 2018, were recently elected President and Vice President.

The 800-member local represents workers from United, American, and Southwest Airlines in MIA, PBI, and FLL, Ramp Service workers at Spirit Airlines in FLL, and UGE members in EYW. Tim and Chris are focused on motivating more members to get actively involved in the union to form local committees and work on community service and other projects. The new leaders are encouraged by the turnout they saw in their election, where many local members voted in a union election for the first time.

Local 368 meets every second Wednesday of the month at 7:30 PM. The location for meetings varies to accommodate the membership that is spread out over several cities. Detailed information on meetings is posted on bulletin boards, and Tim and Chris personally welcome all inquiries.  Feel free to give their Facebook Page a like and share!
