An alliance between Victory Lodge 1725 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Sky Harbor Lodge 2559  in Phoenix, Arizona is offering a glimpse of what may be the future of unionism: Peer-to-peer training, tighter communications, and joint action are helping create more effective union networks. Recently, CLT opened its doors to representatives of the PHX Local for a frontline tour, demonstrating just how similar airline workplaces are.

Solidarity In Action

PHX and CLT Committees Work Together for Fairness and Consistency.

In the course of performing their duties, every union representative has at one time or another heard a member of management present a new policy or procedure as something that was tested in another station with good results. A manager may boast that “the Union in station X signed off on it and they love it.” As is the case with all aspects of effective union representation, it is really up to the union reps to take nothing at face value and do a proper investigation before reaching a conclusion.

“These kinds of tactics only work if we don’t communicate with each other, which is why CLT and PHX communicate at the very least once a week, often more,” said Brian Harrison, Chair of the Sky Harbor Lodge 2559 Grievance Committee.

After the signing of a new Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement between the IAM/TWU Association and American Airlines in the Spring of 2020, IAM Grievance Representatives in PHX became full-time union reps. They decided it was time to engage in some real hands-on experience and again relied on their Brothers and Sisters at Victory Lodge 1725 in CLT for support. “We couldn’t think of a better group to shadow for a few days to see what they have learned; what works, what doesn’t work,” said Brian.

COVID restrictions delayed the trip, but last month, PHX Committee Chair Brian Harrison joined Representatives Trina David and Dominic Pochiro to visit Douglas International Airport in CLT.

“We expected the trip to be productive, but those three days blew away our expectations. The back and forth of ideas between the two committees, walking the break rooms, and the ramp, and seeing the different ramp culture was eye-opening,” said Brian.

The PHX reps were struck by how despite differences in climate, facilities, and culture, the questions and complaints the CLT reps receive are almost identical to the ones they hear at their home station.

While the trip strengthened the bonds between the two locals, Brian pointed out that when American initiated shift bidding online, it was the committee members from FLL who advised PHX reps on the pitfalls and what to expect, based on their experience. The PHX committee was happy to pay it forward by advising CLT on the system when the company introduced it there later. “Now the roles are reversed, with CLT helping us navigate the new “Scripted Turns” policy here in PHX,” said Brian.

“The experience, knowledge, and above all else the perspective we gained from our field trip to CLT was invaluable. The hospitality we were shown by the CLT Grievance Committee, and [District 141 AGCs] Mike Fairbanks and Mark Baskett are unparalleled and we can’t wait to repay the favor when they come to visit PHX. Hopefully, this is just the first of many trips and exchanges of its kind.”

Dear Member of IAM District Lodge 141:

We are writing to inform you about a special benefit offered by IAM District Lodge 141: the Adolph Stutz Memorial Scholarship.

Each year, our District awards several scholarships to qualified and deserving members — or their children, grandchildren, or spouses — who are pursuing a college education. The scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $2,000. An independent committee selects the scholarship winners on the merits of the essay submitted by each applicant. The topic for this year’s scholarship essay competition is “COVID-19 has affected societies and economies around the world. Where do we go from here? What should the priorities be for mankind?”

The rules of the competition are attached with an application. We urge you to take advantage of this outstanding opportunity for you or someone in your family. The scholarship money can be used to help pay for tuition, fees, books, living expenses — it’s up to you, as long as it makes your life as a student easier!

Our union’s mission has always been to lift working people so they can build better lives for themselves and their loved ones. We are proud to offer the Adolph Stutz Memorial Scholarship as one way our District helps members and their families achieve their dreams.

In Solidarity,

MICHAEL KLEMM,
President & Directing General Chair,
District 141,

Dozens of Machinist members gathered in Maryland for an annual IAM-sponsored charity golf tournament. This year’s fundraising recipient is the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home which is located about 30 minutes from the IAM Grand Lodge in Maryland.

Machinists Union Raises $100K for Southern Maryland Veterans Home

The IAM’s commitment to military veterans was on full display at the 2021 IAM International President’s Capital Classic Golf Tournament.

More than 130 golfers and 50 sponsors joined together on Monday, May 3 at Breton Bay Golf and Country Club in Leonardtown, MD. The tournament raised approximately $100,000 for capital improvement projects for U.S. military veterans at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in Southern Maryland.

“The Machinists Union has a special bond with the military and the men and women who serve in our armed forces,” said IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr., a U.S. Navy veteran. “Many of our members are veterans themselves and help support the mission of service men and women every day. This is just one more way we can give back to our community here in Maryland and to our nation’s heroes.”

IAM Local 4 (District 4) is proud to represent caregivers at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, which has been proudly “serving those who served” since 1985. Its mission is to continually develop and deliver a safe, dignified and compassionate health care system; and provide a nurturing and engaging home environment for Maryland’s veterans and eligible spouses.

“I’d like to especially thank all the players, sponsors and volunteers who made the 2nd annual International President’s Capital Classic possible,” said Martinez. “It means so much to be able to give back here in the backyard of IAM Headquarters and the Winpisinger Center.”

The IAM represents 600,000 active and retired members across North America, many of whom are U.S. military veterans who work in the defense, aerospace and federal sectors, supporting the mission of our service members every day.

Dave wraps up the interview recognizing the work that Local 1759 members do in community service. In 2018, they held a golf outing honoring the late District 141 AGC and Local 1759 member Rich Pascarella, which raised $70,000 for Guide Dogs of America. As we resume in-person events after COVID, Bill is looking forward to planning events like that one.

141 Member Spotlight: Community Service in Action

As members of the Machinists Union, we are called to expand our footprint beyond the workplace and engage with the communities we call home. Finding these intersections between work and home is a vital part of creating modern unions that are more in touch with the needs of real people, according to IAMAW District 141 Community Service Director Cristina Odoardi.

This edition of the 141 Member Spotlight features three of our District 141 Community Service leaders so we can learn about some of the important work they are doing. The video features Noelle Sakamoto from Local Lodge 1781 in Burlingame, California, Debbie Inverno from Local Lodge 914 in Newark, New Jersey, and Tamara Sass from Local Lodge 1885 in Portland, Oregon.

The Community Service Chairs describe the challenges they faced in the past year, and how they have continued to work safely to address the diverse needs in their areas. Local 1781 runs a food distribution program twice a month in partnership with other unions in the Bay Area to help hundreds of families experiencing food insecurity. They have organized supplies in a shelter for victims of domestic violence and are planning an event to recognize health care workers for their heroic work in the past year. In Newark, Local 914 members regularly contribute to a food pantry and soup kitchen and provide monthly support for a youth mentoring program. In Portland, committee members collected donations to benefit a women and children’s shelter and to purchase gift cards for troops traveling through the airport during the holidays. Local 1885 alternates their drives to benefit food banks in Oregon and Washington since their members live in both states.

Cristina Odoardi joins the conversation and explains the huge negative impact the coronavirus pandemic has had on the Machinists Union’s favorite charity, Guide Dogs of America and Tender Loving Canines. Dozens of events have been canceled due to restrictions on large gatherings of people to avoid spreading the virus. She and Dave urge members to continue to support the work of GDA as we look forward to events scheduled for later this year as COVID restrictions are relaxed.

Any union member who wants to work to spread goodwill in their community should contact Director Cristina Odoardi or reach out to their local president, AGC, or community service committee chair. She summarizes other community service activities that have taken place at different local lodges around the country, and she stressed how important it is to just do something. “Every area is different, but any small gesture of kindness to give back to the community helps everyone,” said Odoardi. “There’s nothing too small, and together we can make a difference.”

For the past three years, Local 914 has sponsored 15 children at the Vashti School for Future Leaders, a free after-school program founded by Nicole Washington in 2007. Ms. Nicole, as she is known to the program participants, works as the Youth Development Director at the Newark YMCA, which is how she and Debbie Inverno first met.

Local 914 Spreads Sweet Spring Cheer in Newark

Celebrating the arrival of the Spring season, Local 914’s Community Service Committee Chair Debbie Inverno organized two events to bring smiles and cheer to children at the Vashti School mentoring program in Newark, New Jersey.

Sister Debbie knows well that need knows no season, so the Local 914 Community Service Committee keeps a donation box by the Customer Service time clocks at Terminal C in Newark. They routinely collect non-perishable food and supplies, but Debbie likes to do something special for holidays. In early March, she organized a candy drive for the Vashti School Saint Patrick’s Day celebration. The teens who take part in the program loved the treats, and Debbie gleefully wrote on the local’s Facebook group how great it was to show that “Local 914 will not forget the Vashti School.” When she delivered the treats to Nicole Washington, who directs the after-school program, they began talking about how to spread more cheer for the upcoming Spring celebrations and Easter.

Debbie put out a call for donations for Easter baskets, and Local 914 responded in true Machinists’ “Service to the Community” fashion. After weeks of work, Debbie and fellow committee member Lee Carpenter collected enough candy and small gifts to put together not just 15 baskets for the Vashti School, but also 4 giant baskets with enough treats for 300 children in foster care currently housed at the Newark YMCA.

Debbie made her requests for donations and kept Local 914 members informed on the committee’s progress through regular posts on the local’s Facebook group. “I am thankful for the kindness of my union Brothers and Sisters, and for the support of our leadership, from Shop Stewards, officers, President Bill Gula, and I can always count on our District 141 AGC Rich Creighton and Community Service Director Cristina Odoardi. We worked together to spread a little joy. Thank you!” she wrote.

The two women developed a strong alliance and friendship which has helped identify needs and target some community service activities at the local to reach underserved children and families. The Vashti School of Future Leaders recognized the commitment of the Local 914 members to the program’s mission by presenting them with the Community Impact Business Award, and Debbie Inverno with the Humanitarian Award at their fundraising event in 2019.

Help IAM Members in Texas with a Donation to the IAM Disaster Relief Fund

Unprecedented winter storms and below-freezing temperatures combined with rolling power outages created a disastrous and deadly situation in Texas and the surrounding area.

This part of the country rarely experiences extreme winter weather conditions such as this, making the circumstances even more dire.

IAM members whose homes sustained weather-related damages making them uninhabitable or in need of extensive repairs may qualify for assistance from the IAM Disaster Relief Funds.

If you participate in qualifying Union Plus programs, you may also be eligible for a one-time Union Plus $500 Disaster Grant. (use “Union Plus” in the link, and or their *graphic, see below)

Please keep our IAM Sisters and Brothers in mind during this critical time by donating to the IAM Disaster Relief Fund.

Every dollar you give to the IAM Disaster Relief Fund goes directly to IAM members and their families in need.

Donations are tax deductible. IAM Assistance is a registered IRS 501(3) (c) – Tax ID: 46-2575531 – (IAM Assistance (ID # 46-2575531) is an IRS-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Your contribution is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.)
