      Helping Hands addresses suicide this month. We feature the 988 hotline that was funded and put in place last July. Since then, calls have increased over 800%! The line is a good resource and can help each of us when we aren’t sure about what to do. Of course, always consult your upline EAP Peer – every time you have a potential suicide. I always call a fellow EAP whenever there is a potential suicide – to insure that I am covering all of the bases. Your regional reps, along with Tony Rodriguez, Chris Davis and now Christine Mahoe on Hawaiian and I are always available to talk. Please welcome Chris as a part of our leadership team! 
 
       There are some signs and symptoms covered this month – those are the entry point for talking with someone your are concerned about. Again – consult consult consult!

      April is acohol awareness month. The National Institute of Health (NIH) is a great resource for information about substance use disorders. I encourage all of you to take a look at their web site: niaaa.nih.gov. Most of the information is free and downloadable. 
 
      This has been a rough winter. The workloads have all increased, there are pressures on you and all of our co-workers. Some are handling the pressure and stress well, some are not doing as well. Thank goodness you all are there – to help when the pressures and stresses become too much. Even a kind word can make a difference under those circumstances. Simply listening to someone has a big impact. 
 
       Thank you for being there – for helping others. It is important work.

Kris N Treder Named New District 141 EAP Midwest Regional Coordinator

IAMAW District President Mike Klemm and EAP Director Bryan Hutchinson have appointed Kris N Treder to serve as the new District 141 Midwest Regional Coordinator. Kris will provide confidential guidance and professional help to the IAM/EAP Midwest Regional team and its members in her new role. Kris is a long-time United Airlines employee and has been with the company since 1995 when she worked as a Reservations Sales and Service Representative.

Kris brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new position, having worked in various hospitality and airline industry roles. She is friendly and positive and committed to standing up for truth, justice, and empowerment. Kris was born into an airline and hospitality family, and her father was an active member of the same Local 1487 while working for Flying Tigers.

Kris is passionate about assisting and empowering her fellow union members, and her goal is to reach as many of them as possible in need of help. She is committed to building a trusted network, providing educational information, and having the knowledge at her fingertips to provide guidance to the United/Union family. She plans to create support groups and involvement opportunities to create the best work/life atmosphere possible.

Kris’s appointment comes at a time when the IAM/EAP program is needed more than ever. The program provides free and confidential guidance to union members and their families on a wide range of personal and work-related issues. Kris will work closely with the IAM/EAP Regional team to ensure that members can access the support they need.

Kris’s IAM/EAP program mentors have been instrumental in her success, and she is grateful for their guidance and support. She looks forward to working with the fantastic team of men who have welcomed her into this new role.

Kris N Treder Named New District 141 EAP Midwest Regional Coordinator

IAMAW District President Mike Klemm and EAP Director Bryan Hutchinson have appointed Kris N Treder to serve as the new District 141 Midwest Regional Coordinator. Kris will provide confidential guidance and professional help to the IAM/EAP Midwest Regional team and its members in her new role. There are a lot of hyperlinks in the electronic version of Helping Hands. I encourage you to explore the hyperlinks so you know what is available within this resource. There are a lot of great links to help find treatment and help vet treatment resources. The second page highlights informed questions to ask when considering treatment and questions to explore with a treatment resource you are considering.

       February is the month to focus on relationships. A definition of relationship is included as well as how to enhance relationships, how to keep a healthy relationships and how to handle conflict in a relationship. Communication is of course the most important component of a healthy relationship. Please communicate about the EAP and that your co-workers can come to you to find resources to help them with any issue they may be experiencing.

     This month we cover well-being. Many companies are stepping up and realizing that retaining high-caliber employees means offering benefits that are attractive and help retain people. The focus is on the different aspects of well-being – emotional, physical, social and work are a few examples. Please share this with your groups and feel free to put your contact information on the placard on page 2 so they know who to contact. I included both the PDF and .docx versions – so you can customize the issue with your contact information. 
 
       The holidays look to be a roller coaster ride this year – please be sure to do the things you need to to take good care of yourselves. Our co-workers may be experiencing difficult circumstances, and we can be a good source of information and referrals to “ease” the way. As always, your EAP leadership team is here to support your efforts. Please don’t hesitate to call Chris Davis, Tony Rodriguez, myself, or any of the EAP Regional team with any questions or situations.
