IAMAW District 141 President Mike Klemm announced the appointment of Tony Licciardi to the position of District Trustee, effective March 1st. The Executive Board of District 141 voted unanimously for Licciardi to replace Barb Martin, who took over responsibilities as Vice President, East.

Brother Licciardi, President of Local 1487 in Chicago, Illinois, was initiated into the IAM when he began working at United Airlines in 1997. Less than a year later, he was an active union member and was elected Shop Steward. Over the next 23 years, Tony has served IAM members as Conductor-Sentinel, Trustee, and Vice President before he was elected President of his local lodge in 2000.

IAMAW District President and Directing General Chair Mike Klemm praised the appointment, calling Licciardi a “modern, active unionist.”

“I congratulate Tony Licciardi and welcome him as the newest District 141 Trustee,” Klemm said. “As president of the largest local lodge in the district, Tony has demonstrated extraordinary leadership, has increased member participation in committees and activities and has modernized his local lodge building while maintaining the financial stability of Local 1487. He is well qualified for this new role and I am confident will perform his new duties with excellence.”

As District Trustee, Tony Licciardi is responsible for the administration, safeguarding, and oversight of the financial assets of District 141.

Machinists Union Congratulates Marty Walsh on Labor Secretary Confirmation, Looks Forward to Worker-Friendly Labor Department

Robert Martinez Jr., International President of the 600,000-member International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), released the following statement on the confirmation of Marty Walsh as U.S. Labor Secretary:

“I want to congratulate Marty Walsh on being confirmed as the new Secretary of Labor. Marty is a faithful ally to the Machinists Union and all working families. Marty stood by our union during his days in the Massachusetts State Legislature and as Mayor of Boston. As mayor, Walsh proved himself a fierce ally of the IAM by defending more than 400 IAM Local 264 bus mechanic jobs from privatization.

“Marty’s character will uplift the plight of working men and women throughout our nation and provide the necessary safety measures that allow them to return home at night. Marty understands working people, and his leadership will create the change workers so desperately need as we climb out of this pandemic.

“Our union looks forward to working with a worker-friendly Labor Department that will put workers first in the manufacturing, aerospace, transportation, automotive, defense, healthcare, and other industries. Secretary Walsh and Deputy Secretary Julie Su will be working peoples’ champions, and the Fighting Machinists will be right there by their side. We thank the members of the Senate who voted to confirm Mayor Walsh and for giving him the opportunity to continue his fight for working families on a national stage.”

141 Report: Frank A. Marco, Trusted Partner in Labor Law

A skilled Labor lawyer is a necessary asset for any successful union. Navigating complex employment laws, labor contracts and changing conditions in the workplace often requires the advice of an experienced counsel. Their work is also valuable in issues related to organizing and union administration.

This week Dave speaks with Frank A. Marco, a partner at Gregorio & Marco who is the manager of the firm’s Labor Law department.

Frank A. Marco is a graduate of Marquette University and Cornell Law School and has represented labor unions for over 25 years. Gregorio & Marco began their relationship with the IAM working for Local Lodge 1487 in Chicago and started representing District 141 ten years ago. He also works with a variety of building trades unions.

“Labor unions are highly regulated, more so than any other business, so there’s a lot of traps out there and a lot of areas for us to work with the leadership,” he said.

Frank speaks about the Duty of Fair Representation and how important it is for Shop Stewards to gather information and properly document every case, to take thorough notes of statements and hearings, and to not pre-judge any situation. He also answers Dave’s questions regarding mandates for vaccines and testing in the workplace, legal accommodations, how to safely navigate social media, and how union solidarity is a necessary tool today when we face constant attacks from powerful corporate and anti-union forces.

The conversation also covers how unions create work environments that are understandable to a diverse group of workers, and how the culture of mutual trust they create helps secure healthy and long careers for working people.

“Our union and the labor movement will always fight against hate. We stand strong for equality and understanding..”

Machinists Union Stands with Asian American Community After Horrific Atlanta Shootings

IAM international and local leadership issued the following statements after the recent mass shootings in Atlanta:

“The Machinists Union is outraged and deeply saddened by the senseless murders in Atlanta,” said IAM International President Robert Martinez Jr. “Asian Americans make up a critical, and growing, segment of our union family and our communities. A racially based attack on any of our Brothers and Sisters is an attack on each and every one of us. We are firmly against the surging violence against Asian Americans and any group based on race. Our union and the labor movement will always fight against hate. We stand strong for equality and understanding. The IAM’s profound thoughts and prayers go to the victims’ loved ones and we pledge to fight for a better tomorrow.”

“These women were killed while working low wage, vulnerable jobs while the COVID-19 pandemic continues,” said Georgia AFL-CIO President and IAM member Charlie Flemming. “While the motive for the shootings are still under investigation, one thing is certain: These attacks speak to the systemic impacts of misogyny, racism, and white supremacy targeted at the Asian American community. We stand in solidarity with the families who have had these lives unjustly stolen from them. However, Asian Americans need more than solidarity — they need our support, commitment and real solutions.”

141 Report: John Martinez, President of Local 1886 in Denver

This week Dave travels to the Mile High City of Denver, Colorado, to speak with John Martinez, President of IAM Local Lodge 1886.

A native New Yorker, John moved to Denver searching for job opportunities, and just a few years after he began working at United, his coworkers suggested his “vocal” style would make him a good union representative. Brother John Martinez has held positions as Shop Steward, Grievance Committee Rep, and also served as Local 1886 Trustee and Vice President before he was elected President in 2011. Now serving his third term as president, he has broadened his activism in the Colorado AFL-CIO and also as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Colorado State Council of Machinists.

While DEN continues to expand air service and has mostly avoided furloughs, John shares the concerns that every airline worker felt at the height of the pandemic. Regardless of seniority, the pain was felt by everyone who worried about the future of their livelihoods, but John points out the important role union activism and solidarity play in protecting and supporting every worker. He lobbied elected officials to support the Payroll Support Program and took part in activities to help elect pro-labor representatives in Colorado. He said he plans to continue to be involved as a union activist “for the rest of my career.”

John and the members of Local 1886 are looking forward to resuming in-person events, and have begun holding shop steward meetings following strict protocols. He is hoping they can begin holding retiree luncheons again soon and invites everyone to the Local 1886 Golf Tournament to benefit Guide Dogs of America, scheduled for June 25.

This Local’s emphasis going into 2021, according to Martinez, is on removing barriers to activism and participation for the front-line members. Due to the pandemic, the Local was forced to cut back on several committee activities. Among these were the popular Retirees Committee, which was a hard blow for many members. Restoring these opportunities is going to be a major focus for the Local.

If you are a member of Denver Local 1886 and would like to volunteer, please contact President Martinez at the Local 1886 Website by CLICKING HERE >>
