Victory for Airline Customer Service Agents and the IAM

Victory for Airline Customer Service Agents and the IAM

The Senate Commerce Committee Thursday approved customer service assault language into their Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Bill. This language will help protect Customer Service Agents (CSAs) against physical abuse.

The IAM applauds both the House and Senate for including this language, along with the 10-hour rest rule for flight attendants, into their bills. But, unlike the 10-hour rest rule for flight attendants, which was lobbied for by a coalition of unions, the IAM was the only union who fought for the inclusion of the language protecting CSAs.

“I commend our legislative team and our members for fighting vigorously to get this language included in both versions of the House and Senate FAA bills,” said Transportation GVP Sito Pantoja.

District 141 Responds to Empty Threat

District 141 Responds to Empty Threat

Good afternoon DL 141 IAM member,

I learned early this morning from several of our AGC’s that a social media message threatening our members at United Airlines had surfaced. Threats against our members regardless of carrier are taken very seriously by the IAM and all of us at District 141. I immediately had a few AGC’s contact their local authorities while I contacted United Airlines senior management. United Airlines to their credit was on top of the situation and had been in contact with the proper authorities. Law enforcement informed United that this was a non-credible threat.

Fortunately this turned out to be an empty threat. However we should always take these threats seriously. I know that the old saying can sometimes sound simple but it’s important, “If you see something, say something.” Better to be safe than sorry.

In Solidarity,

Michael G. Klemm
President and Directing General Chairman
IAMAW District Lodge 141

URGENT: Tell Congress to Protect Airline Customer Service Agents from Assault

URGENT: Tell Congress to Protect Airline Customer Service Agents from Assault

Today is the day to call your U.S. representative and ask them to stand up against assault on Customer Service Agents at U.S. airports.

Across the country, an increasing number of Airline Customer Service Representatives are being physically assaulted on a daily basis. Some of these injuries have been life-altering.

CALL NOW: 202-224-3121

Tell your representatives to support Rep. John Garamendi’s (CA) amendment to the 21st Century Aviation Innovation, Reform, and Reauthorization Act (H.R. 2997). This amendment to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Bill would require all commercial airlines to adopt an “Employee Assault Prevention and Response Plan so Customer Service Agents get much-needed protection from physical and verbal abuse.

Congress we need to protect Airline Customer Service Representatives now!

Guide Dogs of America Help Machinists Hit the Fairway

Guide Dogs of America brings service dogs to blind and visually impaired men and women in the US and Canada, as well as providing training on their proper use and care. GDA depends on donor support for the funding needed to continue this important work. For years, IAM141 members have supported Guide Dogs of America through awareness campaigns and fundraising efforts like the GDA Golf Tournament held this week at Local 1886 in Denver. This year’s annual golf tournament was a great success, and enjoyed by everyone… but most especially by the guide dogs themselves, who helped the golfers complete the challenging 18 holes at Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield, Colorado. A big THANK YOU to everyone who participated, donated and made the event a success.

IAM141 Stewards and United Airlines Team Up for Safety

IAM141 Stewards and United Airlines Team Up for Safety

IAM141 Shop Stewards and Reps from United Airlines participated in a joint safety forum to discuss the company’s Ground Safety Action Program (GSAP) on June 14th.

About 65 Shop Stewards, representing virtually every employee classification at the massive United Airlines hub in Houston, Texas, participated in the educational forum hosted by IAM Local 811. IAM141 Safety Director Bill Salo conducted three two-hour classes alongside United Airlines’ Aviation Safety members to cover the basics of GSAP reporting. Participants learned how to file a report, and how regulators resolve the reports once they are filed.

GSAP reports allow the front line employees at United Airlines to report safety infractions, unsafe working conditions and non-emergency incidents to Federal authorities and representatives from IAM141 and the company. Using the GSAP reporting tools, all United Employees can serve as de-facto safety inspectors, creating a safer workplace for employees and passengers.
