United Airlines Members to Receive $2.3m in Final Lump Sum Distribution

December 09, 2016

Beginning December 22, over 26,000 IAM members at United Airlines will receive their final lump sum payout.

The total value of the payout is $2.3 million and is the final contractually-required payout of more than a quarter billion dollars in retro and lump sum payments negotiated by District 141 since 2014.

This payout is in addition to base wage rates in IAM contracts that increased this year by an average of 19% and will increase in 2021 to an average of 32%.

Payments will be made on paychecks through the end of December and will be distributed equally to each eligible IAM member.

“Our members deserve everything they receive because they are an integral part of making United successful again,” said District 141 President Mike Klemm. “These payouts are the result of the continued solidarity shown by our members at United.”

The new agreements, reached in April, also provide a 25% increase to IAM members’ National Pension Plan and improvements to their job security.

American Fleet Service Update

December 9, 2016

The committee exchanged proposals with the company this week on Vacations and Hours of Work. Although we didn’t reach a tentative agreement on these articles, we narrowed down the outstanding issues. The company committed to working on these proposals over the weekend and will present their counter proposals to your committee on Monday.
We also engaged in extensive discussions in preparation of our counter proposals for the Overtime and Reduction in Force articles. These two articles are vastly different in the current collective bargaining agreements.

During the week the company met with both negotiating committees over the true-up payments to the membership. There was a question and answer period along with examples of calculations given by the company’s finance department.
Our next negotiating session is scheduled for the week of December 12 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Future sessions are scheduled for the weeks of January 16 in Dallas and January 23 in Orlando.

Sisters and Brothers,

The Fleet Service Committee met with American Airlines this week in DFW.

This week, we focused on overtime and vacations, and during this session we exchanged multiple proposals and held several lengthy deliberations. We understand that these articles are very important to the membership and the complexity of the two separate agreements requires extensive attention to detail in the language proposed.  While we have not reached tentative agreements with the company, we have reduced the outstanding issues in these articles.

In the meantime, the company has not responded to the following articles for an extended period of time:

  • Recognition of Rights and Compliance – The company wants to reserve the right to direct or assign our work under certain circumstances, without the direction of a Crew Chief/Lead.
  • Holidays – The rate of pay and the number of holidays are the outstanding issues in this article.
  • Sick Time – We remain apart on the number of sick days accrued each year and the accrual bank balance.
  • Part-Time – The company wants to base the part-time ratio on the total number of fleet service employees versus the total number of full-time employees.

Current TAs:

Shift Differential Preamble Training, Travel Pay and Meal Per Diem
Grievance Procedures Leaves of Absence Meal Periods
Representation Field Work System Board of Adjustment
Uniforms Absence from Duty No Strike No Lockout
Fitness for Duty Bulletin Boards Probation
Safety and Health Purpose of Agreement Termination of Employment
Shift Trades Furlough Benefits Work Schedules
Temporary Assignments

The following negotiation dates have been scheduled for the remainder of this year:

  • Week of December 5th – DCA
  • Week of December 12th – LAS

Negotiations have been scheduled for the following dates in January:

  • Week of January 16th – DFW
  • Week of January 23rd – MCO

November 13, 2016 – United Airlines IAM Members:

United Airlines Members receive a negotiated wage increase on November 13, 2016. This is part of a contract that will provide approximately 30% higher wages overall.

Sisters and Brothers,

The Fleet Service Committee met with American Airlines this week in Las Vegas. The company presented their plan and implementation for cross utilization to Maintenance and Related.   In continued solidarity, we supported our Association brothers and sisters until there was a satisfactory understanding between the company and the Union.

We received counter proposals from the company and drafted and finalized our responses to a number of articles that will be passed in our next session.  There was movement by the company, which further narrowed the outstanding issues on Vacations and Overtime.  We also received a proposal regarding One Station Complex Agreements, which is currently in the TWU contract.  The committee will evaluate this proposal and its potential effects regarding reduction in force and recall.

The following negotiation dates have been scheduled for the remainder of this year:

  • Week of November 14th – DFW
  • Week of December 5th – DCA
  • Week of December 12th – LAS

In addition, the scheduling committee met with the company and secured the following dates in January:

  • Week of January 16th – DFW
  • Week of January 23rd – MCO

American Airlines Workers Industry Best Pay Rates Go into Effect

American Airlines Workers Industry Best Pay Rates Go into Effect

November 09, 2016

This month, approximately 30,000 ground workers at American Airlines will see their industry-leading wage rates reflected in their paychecks. The wage increases for the TWU/IAM Association represented workers will average approximately 22 percent. Mechanic and Related workers will surpass by three percent similarly classified workers at Delta Airlines. Fleet Service, Stores/Material Logistic Specialists and Maintenance Training Specialists’ wages will increase one percent ahead of their peers at United Airlines.

“These industry-setting increases are the result of the Association Negotiating Committees’ hard work,” said Association Chairman Sito Pantoja and Vice Chairman Harry Lombardo. “These gains are only the beginning for our members as we continue to negotiate for improvements in all areas of our contracts.”

In addition to the industry-best wage hikes, Association members will see improvements to their defined benefit and defined contribution pension plans.

While these gains are the industry benchmark, they are only the first step in negotiations. The TWU-IAM Association Negotiating Committees are in ongoing talks with American Airlines to procure improvements in all areas of Association members’ contracts.

The TWU-IAM Association is an affiliation between the Transport Workers Union and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM).
